“Now the Lord said to Abram, ’Go from your country and your kindred and your father’s house to the land that I will show you. I will make of you a great nation, and I will bless you, and make your name great, so that you will be a blessing.’” Genesis 12:1-2
One of the great journeys of the Bible is the story of Abraham. God told him to leave his home and his father’s house, for a destination that God would show him. It began an adventure with God that would lead to the formation of the nation of Israel and ultimately the coming of Christ.
As we begin 2013, we start another year in our lives. Perhaps like me you have marveled at how fast 2012 raced by. It seems like the beginning of 2012 was just yesterday and now we have started a new year. Time rushes on!
What then will we do with this year ahead? Will there be any aspect of this year that will be of real importance, for us, our family, or the world? Of course, we cannot fully control the events of this coming year. Some events will take place that we have not anticipated and could not have avoided. Our lives are ultimately in the hands of God and only God knows what the future holds.
But there are some things over which we do have control. We can choose to invest our time in labors that help others. We can seek after God. We can love God’s church and work for its good. We can listen for God’s leading and be responsive to the nudges of the Holy Spirit.
The story of Abraham is instructive. It reminds us that sometimes God’s plan intersects our lives. When that happens, we should be willing to respond. In so doing we open ourselves up to adventure, significance, and joy. May God call us, every one to some journey of faith in this upcoming year!
With Warm Regards,
