What Newcomers Can Expect

Newcomers to Alps Road Presbyterian Church on Sunday morning can expect to find a lot of activity around the life of the church. Here are some things to look for:

  • The Contemporary Service begins at 9:00 a.m. Dress is casual. If you come into the building from the covered porch at the top of the building, come down the stairs and head to the right. If you have children you need to stay in the nursery, it is located downstairs, just past the stairs. The worship service is held in the Contemporary Worship Space right beside the kitchen. There will be plenty of people around to point the way. The service begins with a prayer, then about 20 minutes of worship music led by our praise team, along with a time of greeting. Then follows announcements, a prayer for others, and the offering. The scripture and sermon come next and last about 20 minutes. The service concludes with music and benediction. It ends about 9:50 a.m. We serve communion on the first Sunday of the month in this service by Intinction (where you come forward, break off a piece of bread, dip it in the cup, then return to your seat).
  • Sunday School from 10:00 a.m. until 10:45 a.m. Following the Contemporary Worship Service, people stand around and chat, grab a cup of coffee, and either head home or to a Sunday School Class. Alps Road has exciting and interesting Sunday School classes for all ages. Someone can point you to classes for your children and youth, and also suggest an adult class you might like. Newcomers can simply walk into a class and make themselves at home. People will introduce themselves and feel free to introduce yourself to others. Sunday School classes begin around 10:00 a.m., though people sometimes wander in late and that is okay. They are over at 10:45 p.m. From there people head down into the Gathering Area where we have a time of refreshments for everyone. Some people come to the early service and stay for Sunday School. Others begin their day in Sunday School then go to the 11:00 a.m. service. There is nursery during the Sunday School hour for children up through three years old.
  • Gathering Time from 10:45 a.m. until 11:00 a.m. Alps Road has a time of fellowship and refreshment between the Sunday School hour and the 11:00 a.m. worship service. This gives people from both services a chance to mix and mingle. It gives everyone the opportunity to meet with friends, make new friends, and share in a time of fellowship. We hope you will stay and join us for this fun time of fellowship.
  • Traditional Worship Service, 11:00 a.m. This worship service is in a traditional style. The pastors wear robes, the choir sings anthems, and the organist plays all the hymns. While the style is traditional, the tone is vibrant and authentic. The dress is more formal in this service, though we have many people who wear their nice casual attire. There is a children's sermon toward the beginning of the service for children up through the fifth grade. Then they go out to their own worship and learning time with trained staff and volunteers. One of the pastors leads the congregation in a prayer of intercession for needs local around the world. The sermon is preached from the pulpit, followed by a closing hymn and benediction. The choir closes the service with a sung benediction response and a lay leader prays a prayer to send us out into the world. Communion is served at this service on the first Sunday of the month. It is served by passing the plates as worshippers sit in the pews. There is also a nursery for this service. Parents whose children left after the children's sermon may pick up their children in the room off the Gathering Area after the service.
